The picture above shows a portion of the back of a Red Seal Document issued in the name of the King in 1846 just prior to the Kot Massacre. It bears he signatures of several of leading historical figures including that of Jang Bahadur, the founder of the Rana dynasty of hieretiary prime ministers who ruled Nepal until 1951. The full document may be seen on the last page of the section listed below as "A Period of Chaos 1837-1846."
These pages feature the cancels used by the British Residency Post Office in Kathmandu between 1854 and 1911and how they served as models for those used by the Nepalese postal system which was established in December 1879. The Residency prestamp postal markings, postage due markings,delivery markings, etc. which do not have a direct Nepalese counterpart during the Classic Era are not covered in this section. Also, because of the redundancy of design, only a sampling of the date stamps are shown.
